Hatcheries

Over the decades, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's fish hatcheries have modernized procedures and widened responsibilities, growing into fascinating educational centers. Thousands of people travel to the state's 21 working hatcheries each year. Volunteers greet the public and introduce them to the workings of the state hatcheries as well as serve as the biggest conduit of information. The history of California fish hatcheries goes back to the late 1800s when the Legislature called for the restoration and preservation of fish in state waters. Today, hatchery operations stock trout into lakes, rivers, streams and creeks while supplying some salmon species to rivers and direct tributaries to the ocean.
